*While the Altima has a better fuel mileage estimate, it does not offer AWD, which affects MPG estimates. In our opinion, we'd rather have the peace of mind of all-wheel drive with the weather we experience here in the Sandy area. After all, mpg hardly matters if you can't reach your destination to begin with!

2018 Subaru Legacy vs. Nissan Altima

Picking out the right midsize sedan can be tricky.  At first glance, there appears to be a sameness about them that complicates the process of choosing one.  Upon closer inspection, however, you will discover that all midsize sedans are not created equal and that one might be better-suited to your needs than others.  That's why it's important to have all the details in line when searching for a new vehicle.  To help our Sandy customers make well-informed choices, we pit the 2018 Subaru Legacy against the Nissan Altima to see how they stack up.

Subaru Legacy Performance in Winter

Road conditions can get pretty hairy in Sandy as the seasons go by and the weather finds new and interesting ways to make things more difficult for drivers, so it's important to have a vehicle that can handle the challenge.  That's where the Subaru Legacy steps in.  Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive is a standard feature on the Legacy, giving it an extra edge with traction and stability even in wet weather.  Active Torque Vectoring and Traction Control are also standard and provide better handling.  The Nissan Altima is front-wheel drive only.  AWD is unavailable on the Altima even at higher trim levels.

If you spend a great deal of time in your car as many Sandy drivers do, you want to be able to stay connected and stay entertained.  Otherwise, commuting, running errands, and just getting from point A to point B can be a drag.  Luckily, the Subaru Legacy delivers with the standard STARLINK Multimedia system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.  This system lets you access your favorite apps, music, and messages on 6.5-inch or available 8-inch display.

You can find a 5-inch display on the majority of the Altima's trim levels (excluding the base).  A 7-inch upgrade is available.  If you're interested in Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, however, you're out of luck with the Altima.  The Legacy has the leg up here.

Subaru Legacy EyeSight

Your car should inspire confidence every time you take the wheel.  Not only does the Subaru Legacy give you extra skill and added security in poor weather with the Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system, but it also does its part to help you avoid or reduce the impact of accidents with Subaru EyeSight Driver Assist Technology.  EyeSight is available on most Legacy models and offers advanced safety features like Pre-Collision Braking, Lane Keep Assist, and a Blind Spot Monitor.

You can find a rear cross-traffic alert and a blind spot monitor on the Altima if you check out its higher trim levels, but several of the features found in Subaru EyeSight are only available to the Altima via special packages or specific trims if they're offered at all.

Style and Comfort

The Legacy returns for the new model year with an updated look that gives it a fresh appearance and cleaner silhouette while maintaining an aggressive, sporty vibe.  It's a head-turner for sure, but its charm only increases the moment you step inside.  With more passenger space than the Nissan Altima, more legroom, and cushy high-quality seating, the Legacy is simply the most sensible choice if you and your passengers want to travel in comfort.
