How to Check Coolant Levels

Coolant Car Check

Coolant moves through the engine and radiator, absorbing heat and expelling it into the air to keep the vehicle from overheating. Checking the coolant level and topping it off as necessary are essential parts of routine auto maintenance. At Mark Miller Subaru South Towne, we are dedicated to helping drivers in the Herriman area care for their vehicles. Here is our guide on how to check coolant levels.

How to Check Coolant Levels the Easy Way

Most modern vehicles make it easy to check coolant levels. In fact, you don’t even have to remove the radiator cap to get an idea of how much coolant the reservoir contains. Simply look at the markings on the side of the reservoir. If the coolant comes up to or surpasses the full line, you don’t need to add any additional. If it falls below the full line, unscrew the radiator cap and either add coolant or a half-and-half mixture of coolant and water. Check the product bottle to find out if it’s premixed prior to adding it.

At this point, since you already have the hood popped and are looking at the radiator, do a quick visual check. Confirm that all radiator hoses are free of leaks and other damage.

Please note that you should wait until the engine has completely cooled before checking coolant levels, adding more coolant, or touching any caps, reservoirs, or hoses. These components can get extremely hot and cause serious burns.

When to Schedule a Service Appointment

You may be wondering, “What is coolant anyway?” Most brands, including Subaru coolant, are made of ethylene glycol and have a consistency that is somewhere between oil and water. Take note of the appearance and consistency when checking coolant levels. If sludge has built up in the liquid, you may have a gasket leak, which can cause you to lose coolant very quickly, thereby increasing the chances of the engine overheating. Never ignore sludge accumulation in your coolant, and schedule a service appointment at Mark Miller Subaru South Towne in Sandy.

How Often to Check Coolant Levels

It’s normal for your vehicle to use up coolant over time. Aim to check the levels every three to six months. If the liquid is more or less its original color, which is usually blue, green, red, or another bright shade, go ahead and top it off as needed. But if it’s brown, black, or without discernible color, the system should be flushed and the fluid entirely replaced.
