What is Subaru Symmetrical AWD?

Subaru Symmetrical AWD is a system that delivers exceptional traction where needed. The key to Symmetrical AWD is Subaru’s flat Boxer engine. The cylinders are horizontally opposed, creating an essentially flat engine with less vibration than inline or V engines. This contributes to a quieter, more balanced ride. 

Another important aspect of Symmetrical AWD is the orientation of the engine. The Subaru Boxer engine is mounted longitudinally front to back and because it is flatter, the engine can be set deeper in the compartment giving Subarus a lower center of gravity and better handling. 

In FWD and RWD vehicles, power is sent to drive the front or rear axles. In AWD, power is sent to all of the wheels. Symmetrical AWD sends power to the wheels that have the most traction. This provides tighter cornering, avoids oversteering and understeering, and provides a balanced response for Herriman driving in ice and snow and on wet roads, too. 

Why is it Called Symmetrical AWD?

Subaru calls its AWD design symmetrical because of the way the engine and drivetrain are arranged in the vehicle. If you cut a Subaru in half from front to back, the two halves would look like mirror images. They would be symmetrical.

Are All Subarus All-Wheel Drive?

Almost all Subaru models are AWD. The only exception is the Subaru BRZ, a high-performance sports car with rear-wheel drive.
