Air Filter Cleaning: A Step-by-Step Guide

  • Access Your Air Filter: You’ll find the air filter usually encased in a housing to help keep them clean and protected. Your air filter is usually located under the hood, behind the dash, or behind the glove box. Check your owner’s manual for more specific information. You might need a screwdriver and/or wrench to access your air filter. Just be sure not to shake any debris into the intake or airbox.
  • Remove Any Loose Dirt or Dust: Remove the air filter andhold the air filter over a trash can and shake off as much loose debris as possible.
  • Vacuum Your Filter: Use a vacuum to remove the finer dirt and grime from the air filter. A handheld vacuum works best.
  • Apply Air Filter Cleaner: You can apply an air filter cleaner after vacuuming, just be sure to follow what’s recommended on the specific package. Midvale drivers can also make their own air filter cleaner using a 2:1 ratio of water to detergent. Mix it well and spray it onto the filter. Let it sit for a couple of minutes and then follow the next steps.
  • Scrub the Air Filter with a Brush: Use a soft brush to gently clean the air filter. A toothbrush is a good tool for cleaning the crevices.
  • Rinse Thoroughly & Dry the Filter: Rinse off the cleaning solution completely and then give the filter a good shake. Hang the filter upside down somewhere it can drip dry. You don’t need heat and we don’t recommend it. Just let it drip and air dry.
  • Reassemble the Filter: Put the filter back in its place. If you removed the housing, be sure to reassemble it. Again, check your user manual for specific information on your air filter.

Does the Cabin Air Filter Affect AC & Air Quality?

Yes, your cabin air filter can affect your air conditioner and air quality. As your air filter collects dust, bugs, leaves, and other types of debris, it can negatively affect your AC’s ability t cool down the cabin. Over time, this can affect your entire air circulation system.
