Why Is Tire Rotation Important?

Mechanic with Tires

Tire rotation is an often-overlooked aspect of car maintenance that many Herriman drivers forget about. Yet, rotating your tires can save you money in the long run!

Why rotate tires? It extends the life of your tires, so you get more out of your investment. What does rotating your tires do? Rotating the tires at regular intervals prevents any single tire from wearing out faster than the other tires, making them last longer.

What Does Rotating Your Tires Do?

Tire rotations make tire wear even among all four tires on your vehicle. When you accelerate, brake, turn your wheels, and go around curves in South Jordan, all this causes friction between your tires and the road. Depending on the drivetrain your vehicle has, your tire treads will wear out at different rates. Tire rotations make this wear even, whether you have FWD, RWD, or AWD.

  • Front-wheel drive (FWD) vehicle: Engine power goes to the front axle and front wheels, which are responsible for steering, starting, and most of the stopping force when you hit the brakes. Therefore, the front tires will wear out the fastest on a FWD vehicle.
  • Rear-wheel drive (RWD) vehicle: Engine power goes to the rear wheels, but the front tires are still responsible for steering and much of the braking. The rear tires will still wear out faster than the front tires, although at a generally slower rate compared to wear on a FWD vehicle.
  • All-wheel drive vehicle: Engine power is more evenly distributed based on driving conditions, but there are many experts out there that maintain that the rear tires will still wear out faster. Bringing your vehicle in for a tire rotation at a dedicated service center can help you determine when to rotate your tires.
  • Intelligent all-wheel drive systems: Going around curves means different levels of strain and friction on the inside tires vs. outside tires. Some advanced all-wheel drive systems can even direct power to an individual wheel while driving around a curve for better cornering, which will further affect tire life.

If you plan on driving a lot during harsh UT winters, we highly recommend an AWD vehicle, such as the family-friendly Subaru Crosstrek or Subaru Outback. They’ll help you maintain better handling on Sandy roads and highways.

How Often to Rotate Tires?

On average, tires should be rotated every six months or every 5,000 miles to 8,000 miles. These intervals may be different based on your vehicle’s make, model, and year. Check your owner’s manual or vehicle information center for exact numbers. We recommend getting tire rotations more often for AWD vehicles versus FWD or RWD vehicles.

If you’re still unsure about how often to rotate your tires or you have additional questions, one of our certified service technicians can give you more information on how to care for your car’s tires

Why Rotate Tires?

If you don’t schedule tire rotation service, the tires will wear out faster than they should. Failing to rotate and replace tires at the proper time can lead to dangerous situations that can cause accidents.

This is what could happen when you don’t rotate the tires:

  • Poor traction and skidding on the roads
  • More rapid deterioration of brake pads
  • Flat tires and blowouts
