Determining Tire Number Meanings

The tire’s code uses numbers and letters to inform you of the following on the tire:

  • The size
  • The load index
  • The speed rating
  • Type of tire needed for maximum performance.

To fully answer what tire numbers mean, let’s use our code.

Tire Number: P215/65R15 95 H

What do these tire numbers mean? Let’s start from the beginning:

“P”

Short for “P-metric tire”, this indicates that it is used for passenger vehicles. Another common letter combo is “LT”, or “light truck”, intended for light-weight pickup trucks.

“215”

After the “P” comes this number, which represents the tire width in millimeters measured from sidewall to sidewall. The width of this tire is 215 millimeters.

“65”

A forward slash brings us to the aspect ratio code, here indicated by the number “65”. What does this tire number mean? The tire ratio is the height of the tire’s cross-section in relation to its width; or this tire has an aspect ratio where the height is equal to 65% of the tire’s width.

“R”

This represents how the tire was constructed. R stands for “radial”.

“15”

This numeral is the wheel’s size measured from one end to the other. This informs us that the tire is meant to be fitted on a 15-inch wheel.

“95H”

Last, but not least, we get to “95H”.The “95” is how much weight the tire can support, or load index. “H” is the speed rating, which shows how fast the tire can perform in South Jordan without danger based on the load capacity. “H” tires can usually reach a maximum speed of 130 mph.
