51 Wasatch Front Businesses, Including Mark Miller Subaru, Call for More Water Conservation
SALT LAKE CITY, June 14, 2021. More than 50 Wasatch Front businesses, along with the Utah Rivers Council, asked Utah governor and legislature to do more to conserve water. Mark Miller Subaru was among them. What the Letter Asks For In a letter to the governor, the 51 businesses asked for a 2 percent reduction in water usage per year. "They need to do far more from a conservation standpoint. We need to do something and we hope the governor is more aggressive, and the state overall has done very little from a conservation standpoint." Steve Schmit, owner of Western Rivers Flyfisher "We need water. Not just the trout that we fish for in our streams but also for water quality, I mean it all trickles down to us eventually." Steve Schmit Outdoor Businesses Speaking Up Wasatch Touring also signed the letter. "The levels of the rivers and the reservoirs that we love to play and explore and recreate in have been going down. It is definitely coming to a point where it is going to take kind of a rallying cry for this." Dylan Timmer, co-owner of Wasatch Touring Why Mark Miller Subaru Signed "We have a lot of outdoorsy customers and they are out there. And they are on the lakes and up in these mountains and they are seeing these rivers." Jeff Miller, owner of Mark Miller Subaru What We Already Do The retailer is already doing a lot to conserve water and energy, from solar panels and xeriscaping to a recycled water car wash. "It is heartening to see that others feel the same way that we do." Jeff Miller Visit Mark Miller Subaru South Towne Mark Miller Subaru South Towne is at 10920 S. An Excellent Equation for Success: The Mark Miller Subaru Story
There is no single trick behind a car business that lasts. At Mark Miller Subaru the formula has been consistent for generations: a family that stays in the business, a brand that fits Utah, and a habit of giving money back to the community that spends it here. Four Generations of Millers Jeff Miller is the fourth generation of the Miller family businesses, which started in the early 1900s. He became General Manager and Chief Executive Officer after buying out his father, Mark Miller, who spent 45 years in the automotive industry. Fifty Years With One Brand In December 2021, Subaru of America presented Mark Miller Subaru with a 50-year award. Five decades with a single manufacturer is uncommon in retail automotive, and it says something about the fit between the brand and the state. Giving Is Part of the Business Model Since 2010, Mark Miller Subaru has donated over $3.7 million to charity to help people, pets, and the planet, working with more than 100 Utah nonprofits. In 2018 the retailer was named Subaru Love Promise Retailer of the Year, the most distinguished award Subaru of America gives each year. Doing It the Right Way In 2016 the David Eccles School of Business Daniels Fund Ethics Initiative, the Daniels Fund, and the Community Foundation of Utah honored Mark Miller Subaru with the Most Ethical Business award at the Utah Ethical Leadership Awards. Building Green Mark Miller Subaru was the first retailer in Utah certified in the Subaru Eco-Friendly Retailer Program. Both stores are solar powered, with more than 1,200 panels across the two rooftops, and both car washes recycle their water, saving 75 gallons per wash. Rez Dog Rescuer Up for International Unsung Hero Award, With a Lift From Mark Miller Subaru
A rescuer working to get stray dogs off the Navajo Nation and into homes was nominated for an international Unsung Hero award. Part of that work runs through a chartered plane out of Utah. How the Rescues Work If the crew sees a dog in critical need on the street, they will pick it up, but in deference to Navajo Nation law they usually pull from existing rescues on the reservation. Where Mark Miller Subaru Comes In Sometimes Utah Subaru retailer Mark Miller helps out with a chartered plane, which cuts the trip down to a few hours. A drive that eats an entire day becomes a short flight, and dogs in poor condition get to care faster. A Long Way From the High Desert The lush mountains of Park City are a far cry from their high desert homeland, but the rez dogs adjust quickly, McCurtain said. In fact, they usually think they have died and gone to heaven. Pets Are Part of the Love Promise Helping pets is one of the pillars of the Subaru Love Promise, and it has been a steady part of what Mark Miller Subaru supports in Utah, from reservation rescue flights to local shelter partnerships. Mark Miller Subaru Gives the Gift of Transportation to Ronald McDonald House Families
When the COVID-19 pandemic forced Ronald McDonald House Charities to change how it houses families, Mark Miller Subaru stepped in with the one thing those families suddenly did not have: a way to get where they needed to go. A Housing Model Had to Change Ronald McDonald House Charities made the difficult decision to suspend its communal living model and instead found safe, separate temporary housing for pediatric patient families with high acuity children. That change left many families with no means of transportation to and from Primary Children Hospital. Subaru Loaners for Families Who Needed Them Mark Miller Subaru heard about the problem and moved quickly to offer Subaru loaners to families in need, closing the gap between temporary housing and the hospital. PPE for the Staff Mark Miller Subaru also donated PPE face masks to all Ronald McDonald House employees who interact with patients and the public, so staff could stay safe and healthy while providing these critical services. One of the First Moves by a New CEO This was one of the first things Mark Miller Subaru new General Manager and Chief Executive Officer did after taking over. Jeff Miller bought his father out following Mark Miller 45 years in the automotive industry, and now marks the fourth generation of Miller family businesses that started in the early 1900s. Suba Bleu Miller on the Expansion of The Sharing Place, a Mark Miller Subaru Love Promise Partner
Suba Bleu Miller joined the show to talk about a new expansion adventure with The Sharing Place, one of the Mark Miller Subaru Love Promise partners. What The Sharing Place Does The Sharing Place provides a safe and caring environment for grieving children, teens, and their families to share their feelings while healing themselves. How the Support Groups Work The work happens through a support group model that emphasizes acknowledging any and all feelings related to grief, then channeling those feelings through art, play, and discussion. All of it takes place in a comfortable and warm renovated home in Salt Lake City. A Love Promise Partnership Mark Miller Subaru is proud to partner with The Sharing Place as one of its Love Promise partners. The Love Promise is how Subaru retailers commit to the communities they operate in, and in Utah that has meant backing organizations doing work that is hard to fund and easy to overlook. Nuzzles and Co. Rescues Stray Animals on the Navajo Reservation
There were 250,000 stray and roaming dogs and cats on the Navajo Reservation in the Four Corners area in 2014, according to the tribal council. That was the year Nuzzles and Co., the Park City based animal rescue nonprofit, began visiting the area for monthly rescue trips. Monthly Trips to the Four Corners The scale of the problem is what makes the schedule matter. Monthly visits mean a steady pipeline of animals moving out of the desert and into veterinary care, foster homes, and adoptions rather than a single one time push. How Mark Miller Subaru Helps Mark Miller Subaru supports these missions, including flying animals back on a chartered plane, which cuts a long drive down to a few hours and gets animals in poor condition to care much faster. Subaru Loves Pets Helping pets is part of the Subaru Love Promise, and it has been one of the most consistent threads in what Mark Miller Subaru supports across Utah. Inside the Largest Nuzzles and Co. Pet Rescue Mission of 2018, Flown by Mark Miller Subaru
Nuzzles and Co., a Utah nonprofit, organizes animal rescues every year in the Navajo Nation near Kayenta, Arizona. In 2018, the largest mission of the year went out on a Thursday morning. A 5:45 a.m. Start Starting at 5:45 a.m., volunteers loaded Mark Miller plane with kennels to bring back dogs and cats in need of immediate care from the reservation. Why the Plane Matters Driving animals in poor condition across the Four Corners takes most of a day. Flying them turns that into a few hours, which changes the odds for the animals who need veterinary care the soonest. Part of a Long Partnership Mark Miller Subaru has supported Nuzzles and Co. rescue work over multiple years, including the monthly trips the organization has run to the Navajo Reservation since 2014.
