*While the base Rogue has a slightly better fuel mileage estimate, it does not come standard with AWD, which affects MPG estimates. In our opinion, we'd rather have the peace of mind of all-wheel drive with the weather we experience here in the Salt Lake area. After all, mpg hardly matters if you can't reach your destination safely to begin with!

Outback versus Rogue

When you're thinking about purchasing a new vehicle, it's always a good idea to do your homework. After all, you're talking about a car you'll be driving for years to come, so it's essential that you're comfortable with your final decision. Naturally, a test drive is the best way to assess a vehicle's personality, but you're not likely to have the free time it takes to drive every SUV offered for sale between Salt Lake City and Provo. That's where our handy comparisons are useful.

We decided to put the iconic Subaru Outback up against a highly-popular competitor, the Nissan Rogue, using the entry level model for each vehicle.

2018 Subaru Outback Wagon Driving

The 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine that powers the Outback generates more horsepower than the Rogue's 2.5-liter engine can make, with both SUVs delivering roughly the same pound-feet of torque. However, the Outback offers you more than twice the towing capacity of the Nissan Rogue, making it the better choice when you're looking to take your toys on a trip with you.also  While the Rogue has a slight lead in fuel efficiency of an estimated one mpg both in the city and on the highway, the Outback boasts a fuel tank that's much larger -- so, since you'll actually stop for gas less often in the Subaru throughout the course of a calendar year, you'll quickly offset the negligible difference in the two vehicle's MSRPs.

Both SUVs offer such standard features as cruise control, auto-off headlights, power steering, power windows, back-up camera, AM/FM stereo, MP3 player, auxiliary audio input, trip computer and wireless phone connection. However, the Outback is the only one of the two SUVs to offer the ability to include universal garage door opener and remote engine start -- two more-than-useful features for our customers from Murray and other surrounding Salt Lake City communities.

Man and Dog returning to their 2018 Subaru Outback

The Outback and the Rogue both come with anti-lock brakes, brake assist, traction control, electronic stability control, tire pressure monitoring system, daytime running lights, and driver, passenger, side, side head and rear head airbags as standard issue offerings. The Rogue earned a 4-Star Overall crash rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), while the Outback received a top score of a 5-Star rating.

One significant advantage that the Outback offers over its Nissan competitor is the fact that the Outback enjoys standard Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive; in order to get a Rogue with all-wheel drive, you're going to have to add it as an option -- which adds onto the vehicle's price. When you consider the abundant opportunities we enjoy for outdoor exploration, as well as our winter weather, we think it only makes sense to make sure that your vehicle is equipped with all-wheel drive.
